sheep!

If they are healthy, I'm getting my first sheep this weekend. we are all very excited.they are babydoll-icelandic mixes and thus very small. we are down to one goat right now so hopefully the goat and sheep will get along and form a herd. but a second goat is also in our future. we're waiting to find a good meaty buckling around $50 to raise and breed to our milk goat this fall.   Bill Molison (co-creator, describer, of "permaculture") was quoted as saying " eat your pets" I take that to mean…See More

being a leader (and what form that takes)

I have been trying and testing the waters of self sufficiency for a few years now. for the last two I have had "troubles". they were ever present but came to a head last fall. I have waded trough to a bright future filled with goats, sheep, chickens, ducks and of course home schooling my children.we have never made it to a meeting about anything because we live outside bloomington by about 15 miles.  driving in with my three young children seems unhelpful. Keith's emailed suggestion reminded…See More

3rd Annual Useful Plant Sale at Renaissance Farm at United States

April 21, 2012 at 9am to May 13, 2012 at 5pm
“Money is to the social fabric as water is to landscape. It is the agent of transport, the shaper and mover of trade.Like water, it is not the total amount of money entering a community which counts; it is the number of uses or duties to which money can be diverted, and the number of cycles of use, that brings financial independence to a community.” - Bill Mollison -The 3rd Annual Useful Plant Sale at Renaissance Farm will happen over four weekends starting April 21, Earth Day, through Mother's…See More

African keyhole gardening, anyone? Bluegrass Bioneers

I, too, read Keith's call to action and took his cue to take a minute to write.  I am one of those people that currently have a too large carbon footprint and need to find a job in Bloomington so I can return and decrease CO2 emissions.  I live in Louisville and just outside of Bloomington (near the IU Kent Road Research and Teaching Preserve).Although I am limiting my trips back and forth, I do have many things going on down here (Berea is in my work travels) and I think that through virtual…See More

Trillium Horticulture Park

I have maybe blogged three times in my life so here goes.... Where to start? The Trillium planning committee has been meeting about once a month for updates to the entire group. In the meantime there have been two or three meetings weekly for the past 7 or 8 months dealing with City Planners, County Council people, Community Kitchen, the local Farm Bureau Co-op, Soil and Water Conservation District, the Purdue Extention, Solid Waste Management etc. The list goes on and on and on.... In response…See More

Upcoming Events: Climate Change Radio Interviews and Mayday celebration

I just received Keith's "Lead, follow or get out of the way" message, and in response here are some updates:1) For those of you who missed it, Nobel Prize winning climate scientist Michael Mann, whose work demonstrating that industrial civilization and fossil fuel burning are causing global warming has made him a major target of death threats, fake anthrax envelopes, Congressional witchhunts and other attacks by petroleum industry funded funded politicians, "journalists" and other science…See More

The Transition Handbook and me

(From my Facebook)"Borrowed The Transition Handbook from Ellettsville branch of MCPL. Though there are only two copies there was no waiting list. Shoulda been. The global warming and peak oil projections already seem unrealistically optimistic, but it seems to me the world should be beating down doors to read this book. (Maybe everyone else in this group has already absorbed all this material.) Anyway, when I'm done with the book, maybe I'll be ready for some actual work helping the Transition…See More
