DRAFT NOTE TO TRILLIUM HORTICULTURAL PARK WORK GROUP (task force?) FROM SEPT. 13 MEETING
Attendees:  Marie Fleming, Keith Johnson, Steve Hale
1.  Out of several candidate agenda items, most of the time was spent discussing what the next steps should be for the Eco Park initiative.  It was agreed that this initiative is in an "educational" phase in which it is important to inform the group members on a number of topics.  Creating this shared awareness will be critical for enabling the group to develop detailed plans for this initiative.
2. Keith shared an excerpt from the Report of the Bloomington Peak Oil Task Force titled "Toward Greater Local Food Production" and suggested that it provides a good description of what the Eco Park initiative is about.  We agreed to distribute this excerpt to the rest of the work group with the request that each member review the document before the October meeting.
3.  There is a great deal of information on the web about other models for this kind of project.  For the next meeting we ask that each group member look at at least one of the websites listed below and come prepared to speak to the following questions:
 A.  Provide a brief description of the project based on its website - mission statement or purpose, primary functions, resources (land / facilities), etc.
 B.  What aspects of the project appear to support one or more of the 7 recommendations from the "Toward Greater Local Food Production"?  Is this project focused on anything that goes beyond the 7 recommendations?
 C.  If we were to contact the people at this site, what questions would we have for them?
It is OK if more than one person reviews a site.  At this point Marie is planning on reviewing the Transition Putney site and Steve will review the Intervale site.
Other models for this kind of project, some well-advanced, some in planning, are the Intervale Center in Burlington VT (5 stars!), the Western North Carolina Farmers Market in Asheville (4 stars), the Myrick Hixon EcoPark in Lacrosse, WI., the Transition Putney – Green Village Eco-Park, England (.pdf) , the Downtown Houston Eco-Centric Park, the Dunhill Ecopark (England) (a very impressive mixed-use enterprise with a broad forward-looking social and economic vision - 5 stars!), Agricultural Eco-Industrial Parks in China, and an Eco-Industrial/ Agricultural Park in Crestone Colorado
4.  Next meeting - Wednesday, Oct 26, 7 - 9 pm at the Monroe County Public Library / Indiana Room.

Such a wonderful idea that could serve as the symbolic and real focus of all of our efforts towards full-on sustainability in and around B'town.
