Profile Information

How are you currently involved in Transition to a post-petroleum lifestlyle?
Still in the information gathering stage. I have read the book about the Natural Step program which is big up here in Wisconsin, not so much activity with Transition Towns. I have a basic grasp of the transition concept, peak oil and sustainability. Hope to participate in the Bloomington launch in April.
How do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Long time interest in organic gardening and sustainable energy. I look around at the typical American lifestyle and it doesn't make sense. Why would we choose to live this way?
Organic, renewable, sustainable, fair trade, health.... these words make sense to me. I am particularly interested in permaculture and want to take the permaculture design training in Bloomington this year. I also have an interest in developing sustainable communities in Central America and there are a number of groups in El Salvador, Nicaragua and other countries who have created very successful programs and demonstration projects using permaculture techniques. Bloomington has a sister city relationship with a town in Nicaragua and I would like to become involved in some kind of sustainable community work through this connection.
How can you help the growth / acceptance / vitality of local Transition efforts? What can YOU teach us? What can your Group teach us?
I have a degree in Geography. I love maps, and gathering and synthesizing information into an easily understandable form. Many of the sustainability issues we face today have to do with the location and spatial arrangement of resources within and around our communities and our ability to access those resources in order to create a strong local infrastructure. I could easily see myself working with a transition group to identify and create maps of local community resources, and also for basic planning and strategizing for community organizing.

I also have taken basic and intermediate solar installation training with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association and would like to get connected with people interested in renewable energy.

As a geographer, one of my biggest conceptual challenges regarding sustainable communities is how to work creatively with a regional infrastructure that has already been set up and arranged under a different planning paradigm? How can we work with existing transportation patterns and building structures that are already in place and have been for many years? Can we modify the existing conditions rapidly enough, with the political, economic, legal, and social institutions we have now to create a sustainable solution to community needs? I feel that we have the knowledge and technology to design sustainable communities from scratch like LEED architecture, renewable energy, co-housing and ecovillages, but how do we work with existing structures and business-as-usual thinking within a short term time framework like energy descent?

I'll be minimally present, as I get ready for my move. I'm happy to have strength in that group. Ask me about Zen (and other Buddhism) here in town, I'll be happy to help you connect.
