Profile Information

How are you currently involved in Transition to a post-petroleum lifestlyle?
I am not currently involved but very much want to be. I am a community organizer who is deeply concerned about jobs, the environment and the peak oil crisis, and have been seeking a way to combine these concerns and organize around them. I have several skills that I can offer to the Transition Movement.
How do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I believe that green business is the wave of the future, in the sense that home computers were in the early 1980's. And I am very glad for this because of my deep concerns regarding peak oil, global warming and other environmental issues. Further, I am a community organizer employed by the South Central Community Action Program, and job creation is a critical issue for low-income people. I do frequent public speaking and often describe our local jobs problem to audiences. I have been in conversation with Matt Wysocki, Susan Sandberg and Julie Thomas about strategizing to bring green jobs to Bloomington. The Transition movement seems ready-made for this goal! We are at a point politically where federal grant money is available, and it's important that we not miss this opportunity.
How can you help the growth / acceptance / vitality of local Transition efforts? What can YOU teach us? What can your Group teach us?
I can certainly provide information on how the employment system in Bloomington/Monroe County affects low-income people, and thus our community as a whole - it's all interconnected. I have research, writing and PR skills, and can bring these to the Transition movement. And, as noted above, I have already been in conversation with other community members and leaders regarding the need for green employment opportunities in Monroe County.
Your Favorite Books/Websites/Blogs/RSS Feeds for Information about Transition / Peak Oil, etc.
I have only recently been introduced to the Transition Movement, largely through conversations with Vid Beldavs, so have not yet developed resources for information - but am looking forward to doing so. And I'd like to hear about the resources that have proven useful to other people in the Transition Movement!

Bonnie, I'm delighted to hear of your background and abilities, and enthusiastically welcome you to Transition Bloomington. I want to encourage you to join the group which may be called Ecopreneur Incubator (not my title) or might be called MicroFinance (my name for it). Regardless of name, this group has the intention of causing small local green business to flourish. And it needs members. You sound like you might be one who could contribute a lot.
