How are you currently involved in Transition to a post-petroleum lifestlyle?
I teach others how to garden organically in small spaces (backyards, decks etc). Personally I still struggle with driving less since my business requires so much travel, but I have realized it's important to do the small things that add up... Such as planning fuel-efficient trips well and carpooling.
How do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I am a horticultural and recreational therapist. I use gardening and plant-related activities to reconnect, rehabilitate and renew people and feel that the proposed idea of the Thompson/Bloomington Eco-Park could be a thriving place where people AND plants could grow. Gardens can be used for pre-vocational and vocational training opportunities as well as helping people heal (physically, emotionally, socially, etc) through horticultural methods. Just passively sitting in greenspaces have shown to reduce depression, blood pressure and improve cognitive abilites (along with a cascade of other health benefits), but active gardening can be an intervention to teach life skills, help with coping strategies and nourish people both figuratively and literally.
How can you help the growth / acceptance / vitality of local Transition efforts? What can YOU teach us? What can your Group teach us?
I am passionate about spreading the word on the evidence-based research that being in greenspaces has on our health and well-being. I love teaching and engaging people in growing even when they have given up this favorite pastime due to illness or injury. I also understand how important it is to teach our youth how to connect with the earth. Gardening and being outdoors in a well-designed greenspace is the antidote to nature-deficit disorder, hunger and the ever-increasing obesity problems that impact everyone's future.
Can you give 2-5 hours a month in Bloomington to manifest real projects and will you show up?
